This curdbox was about more that straight up beer and cheese. We looked at the tastier side of these pairings and we even tested out the box on our Podcast co-host, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer (Listen here). We got two enthusiastic thumbs up from Julie who is NOT a fan of beer.
So what did we pair? We started with Somerdale's Red Dragon which is a Welsh style cheese that screams EAT ME from the cheese case thanks to it's red wax rind. But the creamy ale-infused cheddar paste is spotted through with mustard seeds that make you wish you had a salami sandwich.
We also added in a tangy block cheddar from Fiscalini creamery in Modesto, CA. As you bring this cheese closer to your cheese hole, you can smell the beer but as you eat it, the hoppiness just brings you happiness.
We also added in Benedict St. Abbey which hails from Switzerland and is so darn cute you'd want to eat a whole wheel (Which is only about a lb.) The meatiness of this smooth and melty cheese makes you want to nibble all day.
And when it comes to pairings, we have an India Pale Ale Jelly from Potlicker, sweet and savory and, by the way, it's perfect on some baked chicken.
We've added in Brewer's crackers because who can resist putting beer cheese on beer crackers? We love the depth of flavor and the heartiness of these crackers with any kind of cheese.
and lastly, a sweet, sweet (and nutty) ending with Anette's Chocolate's Beer Brittle. We think people need to have more interesting sweets on their cheese plates. It really plays with your palate and make the flavors sing.
So raise a glass, or just raise a slice of ale-loving cheese and give a beer-themed kick to your next cheese board.
